National Volunteer’s Week Excursion to Cockatoo Island

Lunch on our Island Getaway

Everybody has said what a fabulous day it was. The sky was a sensational blue, mirrored by the harbour, and it was a great chance to celebrate the efforts of both volunteers and staff of Easy Care Gardening.

As volunteer representative on the Management Committee Daniele Di Paolo reported, “Reaching the island by ferry, volunteers were greeted by staff on duty for the day (tough job, but somebody had to do it…) and treated to a welcome morning tea. Base camp was established by the water, and it didn’t take long for everyone to mix and mingle with other volunteers and staff. A self-guided audio tour gave us some insight into the island’s past as a penal settlement and shipyard, a sharp contrast to the serenity and beauty of the island as it is today. It was then back to camp for lunch followed by a treasure hunt, with time to take some pictures and/or sit back and enjoy the surroundings before catching the ferry back to the mainland.

A huge thanks to organiser and Volunteer Manager Coralie Jensen for putting this excursion together not once, but twice… as last year it was #covidcancelled like so many events as a result of the pandemic.

Coordinator Shuna Papahatzis took this terrific picture.

If you have some photos from the day, we’d love to see them … and you could win a book for your trouble. Just email them to Meredith or post them on our Facebook Page.
